Dead Letter Chorus team up with Canada’s Hey Rosetta for a double headliner this January. Dead Letter Chorus are pleased to announce the release of their debut album ‘The August Magnificent’. Entirely self-produced, the album was recorded over a period of three weeks. In what is quite a departure from their debut EP of ’07, the band have challenged themselves to produce an album that is impacting and lasting. Hey Rosetta have been riding the waves of their acclaimed live show and ‘07’s ‘Plan Your Escape’ EP as they surge forward with ‘Into Your Lungs’. Based in St. John’s, NL, this six-piece group recorded the new release with producer and singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman. The band quickly bloomed and grew from bars on George Street to showcases at Junofest, ECMAs, CMW and NXNE, along the way winning four MusicNL Awards and a couple ECMA nominations.

FRIGHTENED RABBIT (UK) with The Zillions and Echo Echo – SELLING FAST!
Fri 9 Jan   (Doors 8.30)   Tickets: $25+bf – selling fast!   ($30 at the door if still available)
Tickets available from NSC Box Office Monday - Saturday 2.00 - 6.00pm (301 High St, Northcote), on 9486 1677 and online here.

Following just six months in tow of Frightened Rabbit’s debut, ‘Sing The Greys’, their latest release ‘Midnight Organ Fight’ – recorded by Peter Katis (Mercury Rev, Interpol, The National, The Grates), is nonetheless a very different beast. A progression both in terms of songwriting and sonic depth, the majority of songs on their debut were written sporadically over a two year period, whereas ‘Midnight…’ was conceived over a much shorter period, with the band spending much longer in preparation for the recordings themselves. An unconventional three-piece with a defined personality, and a gift for being able to nail a near perfect pop song, Frightened Rabbit convey candid tales of ordinary folk with a wry, acerbic wit via an eloquent, emotive, modern garage-pop aesthetic.

The Pictures’ second album, ‘Kicking Indifference’ comes more than 3 years after their acclaimed debut, ‘Pieces Of Eight’. Self-produced and self-financed, the new release is a grand, glorious record. Singer/guitarist Davey Lane calls it "a little bit trashy, a little bit kitchen-sinky with a wee splash of bombast. It’s the sort of record you’d imagine Queen would make – if they were making it in Ferntree Gully!" Forgetting fads, Davey Lane and Luke Thomas had one simple aim – to make an album of great songs. The Pictures have been on hiatus for the last 2 years or so, overcoming many a hurdle along the way. Lineup changes, management and record label troubles all threatened to put an end to the group, before they resolved to begin recording their second LP late last year. ‘Kicking Indifference’ is set for released on 22 November.

Tony Buck launches his new album ‘Transmit’. Most Australians would know Tony Buck as the drummer and percussionist from sublime improvisational trio The Necks but these driving, cyclonic energy tracks from his new album draw more from his rock and industrial/hardcore roots. These are guitar and drum driven songs based on riffs and rhythm and chiming harmonics that develop and hang in the air like a mantra. With a nod in the direction of music such as My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth, Shellac and The Cure, African drum choirs, minimalism, noise, no-wave, kraut-rock, and pop (the album even features a post-rock Bob Dylan cover!). Project ‘Transmit’ is driving, hypnotic, harmonically rich yet simple and direct. As Tony will be mostly be playing guitar and singing for the live launch of this new project he is joined by a masterful trio... Bass, drums and organ...

Preston Reed, acoustic guitarist extraordinaire, is coming to perform in Australia for the first time including appearances at the Port Fairy Folk Festival. A highly acclaimed musician, who knows how to blend fiery speed with beautifully evocative slower compositions, Preston Reed has virtually reinvented how the acoustic guitar is played. Coming to Australia on the back of his most recent album, the jazz-inflected ‘Spirit’, he practices a flamboyant ‘self-invented’ style, characterised by percussive techniques and simultaneous rhythm and melody lines that dance and ricochet around each other, giving his music a level of excitement that is unparalleled among today’s guitarists. Commenting recently, Guitar Techniques magazine said, “Preston’s two-handed style ensures inspiration and astonishment. His unique and percussive attack supplies the sound of the rhythm section at the same time as the melody. And yet, there’s always something else up Reed’s sleeve such as his spacious slide work.”

After performing in Perth for several years they relocated to Sydney and for the next 5 years they recorded albums and toured the country supporting the likes of Nico, John Cale and The Go-Betweens. These days Mark Snarski lives in Madrid (after Chad’s Tree he formed and sang with the Jackson Code) and Rob Snarski lives in Melbourne (he joined and still sings with The Blackeyed Susans). Rarely are they in the same country, let alone on the same stage...

LOWRIDER with special guests
Fri 13 Mar   (Doors 8.30)   Tickets: $12+bf    ($15 at the door if still available)
Tickets available from NSC Box Office Monday - Saturday 2.00 - 6.00pm (301 High St, Northcote), on 9486 1677 and online here.

With smoothly delivered vocals over a simple ensemble of beats, bass and keys, Lowrider create an immaculate fusion of soul and funk. The band, hailing from Adelaide, are a testament to the fact that the most integral part of being a successful band is making good music. With no gimmicks, special effects or record label backing, this foursome managed to build a reputation as one of the country’s most incredible bands without so much as an EP to their name. Two albums and hundreds of live shows later, Lowrider are undoubtedly one of the most critically acclaimed acts to emerge from Australia over the past decade.
