    • New Zealand’s Camp Alowhum finds Trans Am’s Sebastian Thomson on call as Publicist, and the musical mischievous Hawnay Troof, both stopping in on Australia for a night of street buckling mania. Publicist’s Sebastian Thomson is the drum banger of such awesome indie disco staples as Weird War and Trans Am. This new incarnation takes shimmering disco and pummels it into a sleek panther that leaps from shadow to shadow. Publicist plays on the floor, not on stage. He is of the people and for the people. Watch the video for Publicist’s ‘Hardwork’ here. Hawnay Troof, the solo outlet of Vice Cooler, has defied the trends to create a world of his own. Over the course of six releases he has mixed drive, impulsiveness, and an ever-evolving vision to create some truly unique sounds. He’s toured the world several times, including a Parklife spot where he drummed up so much buzz he was moved to the timeslot right before Peaches.

    • Phil Jamieson has made his mark on the Aussie music landscape. His wildly successful musical adventure has spanned four continents and 14 years. Whilst capturing the audience as Grinspoon’s enigmatic and electrifying frontman, Jamieson has also proven himself as a prolific songwriter, penning tracks on several of the band’s albums. Having completed a run of sold out solo shows across NSW earlier this year, Phil will now grace the stage in Victoria. Over the years, fans have become accustomed to seeing Jamieson own the stage in front of huge festival crowds, with multiple appearances at the Big Day Out and Splendour in the Grass. This is an opportunity to see him in a small, very special solo and stripped back acoustic show. Watch him performing ‘Chemical Heart’ with Grinspoon live in Sydney in 2009 here.

Their optimistic style of alt-rock saw them rise to fame a decade ago to have a career spanning 10 years, and playing 1,000 shows worldwide. Melbourne is in a roar of excitement over the return of this much loved rock band. With many self financed and independently released EPs and albums, including ‘Memoirs of a Common Man’, ‘Aurora’ and ‘Monuments’, Antiskeptic were, and are returning to be, a force to be reckoned with. Brimming with an optimism so often missing from alternative music, Antiskeptic’s unique blend of anthemic and melodic rock cemented their position as one of the country’s finest live acts. Watch the video for ‘Japanese Mountains’ from the gorgeous double A-side single ‘Japanese Mountains/Spotswood’ – a tribute to Japanese volcanoes and the historic Spotswood Sewerage Pumping Station – and new single ‘You Can run (Fern’s Theme)’, an ode to the yearnings of a bridled greyhound. • Here We Rest: The first motto of Jason Isbell’s home state got changed in the early part of last century to a Latin phrase translating to “we dare defend our rights”. Place plays a prominent role in the songs on Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit’s new album, ‘Here We Rest’. Taking a break from a gruelling touring schedule, Jason (previously of the Drive-By Truckers) spent significantly more time at home while writing this album. The time off also had an effect on the musical sensibilities that shaped the album. Jason collaborated with more artists (he played on the latest albums by Justin Townes Earle, Middle Brother, Abby Owens and Coy Bowles), broadening his ideas about how he could present his own music and saying “there’s more out and out rock and roll on this album”. • Called “the perfect blend of rip-snorting, muscular rock that claims Josh Homme as its patron saint, and melodic stoner punk,” by Triple J Magazine Editor Jaymz Clements, four-piece indie rock band Kingswood is rock ‘n’ roll revival at its finest, or wildest, both onstage and off. Their debut single ‘Yeah Go Die’ combines howling harmonies, suspenseful breaks and a heart-pounding drumbeat that drives the song right through. The untamed, Page-influenced riff is accompanied by melodic vocal harmonies that reflect the name Kingswood. The band formed in 2007 when three high school mates and one mutual friend all located in the Prahran/St Kilda area came together. With a clear art for song writing, backed by all four members lending their vocals to the mix, Kingswood provides a refreshing strength to their wholesome Aussie rock shenanigans. Backed with members of Pillow and Blood Duster, Dirtypunkmutha recently played a New Year’s Eve show where they played Christbait material for the first time on a stage since the band’s unfortunate demise in ’96. Christbait’s sound evolved from being a grind/death metal band when it formed in 1989 to being a hybrid of stoner rock, groove metal and grind. They pioneered a sound later adopted by acts such as Blood Duster and Pod People, a pounding, heavy death/grind with a stoner groove. This show is your last chance to see Dirtypunkmutha play Christbait. Ever. Check them out as Dirtypunkmutha at the Tote on New Year’s Eve.

    • Sharing New Zealand passports will be two of 2011’s most exciting debuts, Tiny Ruins and The Vietnam War. Since releasing ‘Some Were Meant For Sea’, Tiny Ruins has toured Australia with Seeker Lover Keeper and performed with Fleet Foxes in New Zealand. In its four star review, Mojo magazine wrote, “watch out Laura Marling”. Auckland five piece The Vietnam War honed their dusty sound over six years and countless shows, awakening New Zealand’s jangly rock legacy with their self-titled first record, named by Rolling Stone as “all back-porch twang and lazy-day jangle”. They’ve shared stages with The Black Keys and The National at home, and borrow tones from The Feelies, Neil Young and The Chills. Tiny Ruins’ gorgeous folk plays a perfect contrast to the warm and weathered country rock of The Vietnam War. • Melbourne’s art-pop explorers Aleks and The Ramps are thrilled to announce the upcoming release of their third album, ‘Facts’, in February 2012. The album, to be launched at this show, is a continued refining of the hook-laden, shimmering pop sounds the band developed on ‘Midnight Believer’ and the sound of the band striking out in a darker, more personal direction. From the upbeat pop serenade of opening track ‘Crocodile’, to the infectious pop of most recent single ‘Middle Aged Unicorn on Beach with Sunset’ (the psychedelic video features a singing flower and was listed at #3 in Mess & Noise’s ‘Best Clips of 2011’ list), ‘Facts’ showcases Aleks and The Ramps’ unique sound; dreamy soundscapes juxtaposed with Alex Badham’s trademark deadpan vocals and stoic lyricism.

    • Continuing to bring their visceral strum and drang to Melbourne’s live venues, Howl At The Moon take to the Northcote Social Club stage for this show to launch their highly anticipated debut album ‘Squalls’. The fruit of over four years’ labour, ‘Squalls’ is, unsurprisingly, an intense listening experience. Showcasing the breadth of the band’s musical largesse, the album is an at times turbulent journey over emotional high seas. From the sonic violence of first single ‘Let The Mainsheet Down My Love’ to the more reflective tone of second offering ‘Just A Kid’ like its name suggests, ‘Squalls’ is unrelenting and enveloping. Stream Howl At The Moon’s new single ‘Just A Kid’ here.

    • Considered one of Australia’s premier alt country folk artists, Jen Cloher plays her first headline show in over a year. Currently recording her third album ‘In Blood Memory’ due for release in 2012, she’ll be previewing new material as well as playing songs from her 2009 release ‘Hidden Hands’ and ARIA nominated debut ‘Dead Wood Falls’. Jen has recorded a limited edition (50 copies) collectors EP ‘Baby We Were Born to Die’, which will only be available at the show in good ol’ fashioned physical format. Watch her perform a duet she wrote with Emily Lubitz here.

    • For as great a band as Dead To Me is, they’re so immersed in style and culture that they’ve always seemed almost as much like an art collective as a rock and roll outfit. They draw on such disparate sonic, visual and intellectual influences as Brit rock, graffiti, Slavic prison tattoos, Midwestern punk, reggae, Day of the Dead iconography, old school hip-hop and modern American History. They recently put forth their latest effort, ‘Moscow Penny Ante’, recorded with Matt Allison at Atlas Studios (Alkaline Trio, Lawrence Arms), and as usual it’s nothing less than the exact opposite of what you’d expect from Dead To Me. Stream ‘A Day Without a War’ by Dead To Me here. Dead To Me will be joined by Cobra Skulls, touring off the back of their third album ‘Agitations’, which was written in less than a month and is possibly thirteen of the most blistering, concise Cobra Skulls songs ever assembled in album form.

    • Hailing from the Gold Coast, Tijuana Cartel has built a firm reputation for beats that span the globe. Multi-layered grooves, touches of slide and flamenco guitar, trumpet, vocals and Afro-Cuban percussion mixed with some hardened electronica. With the sound of their previous two singles – the hypnotic ‘White Dove’ and eminently quirky ‘Letting It Go’ – still wafting through the airwaves thanks to solid radio support, Tijuana Cartel are now set to launch their latest single at this show.

    • Having enjoyed eighteen UK Top 40 singles (and perennial favourites of legendary radio DJ John Peel), The Wedding Present now visit Australia for the first time ever since their 1985 inception to celebrate the release of their eighth studio album ‘Valentina’ in March 2012. Propelled by founding member David Gedge’s perpetual broken heart and incisively brazen lyrics, ‘Valentina’ turns a fresh page on the band’s noisy guitar pop tradition – one that has inspired several generations of canny pop fans and indie rock bands alike. As well as showcasing tracks from the new album, The Wedding Present will also perform their classic 1991 Steve Albini-produced album ‘Seamonsters’ in its entirety. A founding member of Dinosaur Jr. and Sebadoh, Lou is considered a pioneer of the lo-fi movement. After parting ways with Dinosaur Jr. in 1989, Barlow went on to release six Sebadoh albums and earned a devoted following. He also formed Folk Implosion in 1994, stemming his biggest commercial hit to date, a song written for the ‘Kids’ soundtrack titled ‘Natural One’. In 2005, Barlow reunited with Dinosaur Jr. who have since released and reissued several albums and toured the world extensively. A respected solo performer in his own right, he’s released two albums exploring his introspective folk rock roots. Watch him performing ‘Legendary’ live.
