    • Heidi Elva 8.30pm * Dandelion Wine 9.40pm til 10.40pm
    • This year marks the 10th anniversary of Dandelion Wine’s landmark EP ‘Light Streaming Down’. Showing the band’s customary blend of medieval string instruments and electronic beats in a more ambient and ethereal setting than their subsequent releases; ‘Light Streaming Down’ launched Dandelion Wine onto the international stage and resulted in them spending much of the next decade touring Europe and Japan and playing everywhere from Tokyo underground clubs to German castles. In celebration they’ll revisit some of the favourite tracks from the EP at this show, as well as showcase newer work. Joining them on the night will be cinematic audio-visual artist Heidi Elva with her iPhone-driven soundscapes. Stream ‘Shards’ here.

After four years of performing to crowds at festivals around the country, residencies at some of Melbourne’s most notorious music institutions, a tour of Tasmania, and selling out teir debut EP ‘Reaction’, Madre Monte have turned it up and will release their second EP ‘Raza:Madre’ at this show. • Sebastian 8pm til 9pm & 9.20pm til 10.20pm
    • SEBASTIAN is a progressive neo-burlesque performance incorporating dance, live music and video installation. The production’s lustrous aesthetic is inspired by renaissance artworks form the likes of Caravaggio and is conversely infused with more modern tastes like the tongue-in-cheek works of Tom of Finland, and is structured in performance styles such as Brechtian theatre or modern live Electroclash shows. Burlesque is a very popular performance movement, but SEBASTIAN radically deviates from the form with live music and other performance modes incorporated into the show. The show is more rock, hard edge, sexy, humorous and original.

A beautiful opaque collection of swirling pop, the album sees Love Collection dig a little deeper and discover the reflective end of their lyrics, which while simplistic are introspective and in the context of pop music, offer up something nearing the anthemic. From the hazy warmth of opener ‘Piezoelectric’ and ‘Coasting’, the resonant pop tones of single ‘Nobody Knows’, the Floydian vibes of ‘Natures Vice’, to the gloriously ambient ‘Forest’, ‘Euphoria’ is filled with shimmery songs that only age better with repeated listens. This is not to mention the 20+ minutes of the title track, which lulls you with its lovingly entwined drones and Kraut-tones.

    • Paul Reed Smith, founder of PRS Guitars, is presenting a night of great guitar work featuring Electric Mary and Toehider. Described by Classic Rock Magazine as sounding like “Guns ‘n’ Roses meets Free, add Aerosmith’s pizzazz and a pinch of Tom Morello’s staccato chops, all fronted by any iron-lunged singer from rock’s golden age, and you’re getting warm”, Electric Mary’s 2008 release ‘Down To The Bone’ was dubbed “rock album of the year” by the Sunday Mercury. Releasing their debut self-titled EP in 2008, Toehider’s singler and songwriter Michael Mills bypassed the “difficult second album syndrome” by instead releasing 12 albums in 12 months, which saw the band explore a vast array of musical styles and genres. With the project completing in April 2010, Toehider released their follow up project, ‘To Hide Her’, 18 months later. Hear Paul speak briefly before he introduces two of Melbourne’s finest rock acts.

Dissolving LUGs somewhere around the turn of the century, they reinvented themselves as Melbourne rock darlings the Dacios, releasing their album ‘Monkey’s Blood’ in 2009. The brother and sister duo have dedicated their new album, ‘Dancing on Sinking Sands’, which they’ll launch at this show, to their parents. VulgarGrad arose in Melbourne in late 2004 out of a collaboration between some of Australia’s best musicians in underground ethnic styles and the incredible vocal talents of one of Australia’s most formidable actors, Jacek Koman (Children of Men, Moulin rouge). Since their formation VulgarGrad have caused a sensation on Australia’s music and festival scene, as well as an appearance on ABC’s ‘Spicks and Specks’, proving that what Australian audiences really seem to need is a wild night of old-fashioned Russian criminality. After catching the eyes – and ears – of producer Shane Nicholson with their raw and gritty version of bluegrass, the band headed to Nash Chambers’ Foggy Mountain Studios in the Hunter Valley to record their debut album ‘Bloodhound Killed My Squeezebox’ last September. They establish an ‘old mate’ affinity with their audiences while delivering a kick-you-in-the-face live show, setting the tone for a sing along, drink along, foot-stomping good time. Quarry Mountain Dead Rats’ instrumentation of banjo, mandolin, acoustic guitar, double bass and washboard fits the bluegrass mould, but the influence of old-time mountain-music combined with rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities, give way to something altogether different. • It was a broken ankle at the age of 17 that forced Shaun Kirk into sitting still and subsequently into discovering a passion for music. Having written his first song in a hospital bed, Shaun soon realised an irrefutable feel for the blues. Since the independent release of his award winning debut album ‘Cruisin’ in 2010, Shaun has been captivating audiences across the country. With a bevy of new material, Kirk’s first full-length album, ‘Thank You for Giving Me the Blues’, sees the 23-year-old troubadour take a leap in musical maturity. The album, which offers seven original tracks and three covers, including this Bo Diddley classic, ‘Who Do You Love’, has all the passion and vigour you can ask for in a contemporary blues and soul record. Topped off by a cameo performance with Australian blues legend Lloyd Spiegel and Shaun’s resilient, grinding vocal abilities, this is Kirk’s most accomplished work to date.

    • It’s been a whirlwind 12 months for Emma Louise with sold out shows, international notoriety and an endless list of accolades owed to her intoxicating voice, an honest delivery and, of course, boundless coverage of her debut single ‘Jungle’. She now returns to home soil with a bout of intimate shows and a new single entitled ‘Boy’, the first taste of her forthcoming debut album due in early 2013. A swaying mid-paced song, it sits perfectly between her folk musings and perhaps what those loving the percussive nature of ‘Jungle’ might expect. A sure signal of a growingly assured artist – relaxed, yet certain to make her own way. new single entitled ‘Boy’

    • Hugo Race (Bad Seeds founding member) returns to Australia for an East Coast tour, including this show, in support of his first solo album, ‘No But It’s True’, due for release this June. Special guests for the tour are Leek & The War Wick Tragedy, who have just been announced as the first band to sign with Race’s new record label, Rough Velvet Records (MGM). Race will be showcasing tracks from his new solo album, which explores the theme of love, interpreting covers from a maelstrom of music eras going back as far as the fifties, but including greats such as ‘I’m On Fire’. The album is reflective of Hugo’s love of primitive folk and blues songs from decades past. Click here to watch the video for ‘Zeroes’.

    • Let’s get one thing straight: The Good Ship is a very bad ship. Drawing inspiration from fellow denizens of the deep like Nick Cave, The Decemberists and The Pogues, their pelagic folk rock charts some dark and dangerous waters, and a more mangy, cross-bred collection of influences, from gypsy to bush-band via cabaret, country and rock you’ll not hear. In the world of The Good Ship it’s the good stuff that sinks to the bottom. Live, The Good Ship are a seething maelstrom of decadent musicality, with up to nine members on stage at any one time and a whole heap of archaic instrumentation from mandola, lagerphone, fiddle and trumpet to accordion. • Basement is a band making waves around the world. Their take on the punk/emo revival of recent years has led them from their home in Ipswich, England, across the UK and further afield to the USA. Now it will bring them to their devoted fans in Australia and they’ll be joined by Sydney’s Endless Heights. Basement has developed their own distinct sound, combining elements of ‘90s emo, punk rock and hardcore, attaching a British accent and outlook and writing songs about life as they see it. Having slowly developed their name in the UK scene, Basement has shared stages with the genre’s most prolific bands, as well as being featured on festivals around Europe. This tour will feature new songs among the old. Watch Don live in Cairns.

    • For Diesel, the blues are never far away, he’s always infused the spirit and the sound into his music. Born Mark Lizotte, Diesel is one of Australia’s most gifted natural musicians. His talent marked him as special from the moment he first played on a stage and, twenty-two years on, it continues to thrill and amaze audiences. First there was Johnny Diesel & The Injectors – a bolt of lightning that struck the Aussie rock scene. Then he went solo –the dawn of the platinum-selling, ARIA-winning solo era. A blues album with Chris Wilson in 1996, ‘Short Cool Ones’, was followed by a New York interlude producing an album under his own name. Returning to Australia, Diesel embarked on a solo acoustic journey with numerous releases including last year’s endeavour, his album ‘7 Axes to Grind’, a celebration of his most enduring muse – the guitar.

    • Hayes Carll hasn’t been resting on his laurels since topping critics’ polls and winning awards for his 2008 album, ‘Trouble in Mind’. Instead, he’s been on the road nearly nonstop with his band, blasting through honky tonks and rock clubs across the U.S. and beyond. Along the way he’s been inspired to write a crop of new tunes that the acclaimed songwriter says are “a layman’s take on our country – a snapshot of America in some small way.” The result is the sharply drawn collection ‘KMAG YOYO (& Other American Stories)’, comprising fiery rock, twangy country, pensive folk and even a touch of gospel. A military acronym standing for “Kiss My Ass Guys, You’re on Your Own”, the title track is one of a dozen songs that brings to life such rich characters as its protagonist.

    • In music, there are leaders and there are followers. For every blistering riff there is an imitator. For each impassioned bellow, a sound-alike. WARBRINGER did not invent their own vein of metal. They were preceded by greats like Slayer, Exodus, Testament, Anthrax and the almighty Metallica, but over the course of their previous two albums, they have managed to construct songs that are equal parts ferocity and finesse, and in doing so, created a sound that is distinctly their own. With the release of ‘Worlds Torn Asunder’, WARBRINGER are poised to take their rightful place at the table alongside the big boys.
