Mallee Songs launch their third album, Suburban Horse, via local label Dusky Tracks. It’s a record that splits the difference between their first album, the lo-fi Gum Creek and Other Songs, and Natural Times, its more refined and polished follow up. On the new LP, Mallee Songs have written some of their best songs yet, while retaining both the rough edges and soft focus that lends music its inherent mystery and magic.
Suburban Horse is an album full of rich contradictions, all nocturnal and hushed, with dark, observant and often sad lyrics, leavened by instrumentation that turns darkness into a kind of stoic charm. It’s been described in one review as being like “Arthur Russell’s barely there wistfulness with countrified folk, sawdust guitar strums and an air of natural curiosity at nature.” Musically, the record is steeped in 90s indie rock, country and fuzzy psychedelia, with nods to Silver Jews, Yo La Tengo and Morricone along the way. Come and see Mallee Songs bring Suburban Horse to life, with help from some special guests.
