soccer, special sporting events?
All free to air games will be shown on the big screen in the front bar and on the deck.

How can I purchase tickets to shows?
All tickets for NSC are sold via the Corner Box Office

You can buy tickets -

Online via the NSC gig guide page (VISA, Bankcard & MasterCard)

Over the phone with your credit card (03) 9486 1677; or

In person from the Corner Box Office, 57 Swan St Richmond, Monday – Saturday 11am- 8pm (cash and card sales).

You can choose to either collect your tickets from Corner Box Office (57 Swan St, Richmond) prior to the day of the show, have them sent via post (regular or registered), or you can collect them from the door at NSC on the night of the show.
Please note: if the transaction is within 10 days of the show, tickets cannot be posted and will be held at the door for collection.

Why can’t a person under the age of 18 attend shows?
It is a legal requirement of our liquor license that all our patrons be over the age of 18.

Are shows at the Northcote Social Club seated or standing?
All NSC performances are general admission & standing room only unless otherwise stated.

“I lost my ticket”
Once you have collected your tickets, they are solely your responsibility. While we obviously sympathise with the plight of those who lose their tickets or have them stolen, we are unable to reissue them. This is regardless of method of purchase. Even if we have a record of your purchase, we cannot be certain that other less scrupulous members of the public will not use the tickets.
Please treat your tickets like cash, as they are not replaceable.

Do you have wheelchair access?
There is wheelchair access from High St which requires negotiating a small step (15cm). Please ask our staff for assistance if required.

What do you do with the information that you request from me when purchasing tickets?
The information requested is only used for processing your tickets. In the event of a postponed or cancelled show, the Corner Box Office will endeavour to make contact with you. As per the Privacy Act, the information you provide is not supplied to any party outside the NSC or the Corner Hotel.

What are the bookings fees for ticketing?
Booking fees to the public are $3 per ticket.

Is there a smoking area?
The lower area of the deck has an open air section where smoking is permitted.

Can I bring recording devices like audio, tape, camera or film into the NSC?
No, you cannot record an artist’s performance. You would require permission from the artist and the venue as per the Copyright Act, as the performance is “owned” by the artist. The authority to allow or not allow such recording devices on the night rests with the artists performing and not the venue.

Evading trends and falling into repetition might be career suicide for most, yet somehow Hawnay Troof, the solo outlet of Vice Cooler, has defied these odds and created a world of his own. Over the past four albums he has mixed drive, impulsiveness, and an ever-evolving vision to create some very dividing and interesting sounds. Avoiding all pigeonholes, ‘Daggers At The Moon’ is the new album and continues the Hawnay Troof trajectory. Since the release of ‘Islands Of Ayle’ in ‘08, Vice Cooler (yes, that is his legal name) completed a world tour and watched Hawnay Troof’s profile expand by leaps and bounds. The video for ‘Connection’ was voted the #2 Indie Video of ‘08 by MTV2’s Subterranean viewers (beating out heavyweights like Bjork and MGMT), and shortly after ranked as #1 on MTV. He performed at Australias Parklife Festival, along with headliner, Peaches. In ‘09 he also was chosen to open for High Places, Matt and Kim, and Vivian Girls, and stole the stage at Austins Fun Fun Fun Fest by creating a near riot in the parks dustbowl. In between Hawnay Troof business, Vice remixed music by Ssion, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Yacht. He also played drums in Chicks On Speed, Boredoms Boadrum 88, and The Raincoats while also beginning work on a collaborative art book/ band with Mira Aroyo of Ladytron. All in all, its been a busy year!

They will have just returned from WOMADelaide and Port Fairy Folk Festival, leaving audiences there with their ears ringing with Russian swear words and their wallets mysteriously missing. In a long overdue doublebill, the magnificent Woohoo Revue will also be playing on the night, featuring top hats, tutus, trumpets, and blisteringly fast gypsy tunes. Such a combo will only inspire DJ Russian Disco to spin some pretty raucous and ridiculous tunes from the former Soviet Empire and further afield.

From the Mississippi Delta comes homegrown blues with vocalist, harpist, saxophonist and washboard player Stan Street and his wife Dixie Street on drums. The Bluesman has played the US circuit for much of his 60 yrs and regularly tours Europe. Stan has developed his own sound in the delta blues style, playing at the Juke Joint Festivals, Ground Zero (Morgan Freemans local venue), Reds Lounge, the Hambone Festival (centered around Stans own art gallery) and at the many traditional juke joints in Clarksdale. Jaimi Faulkner, (who won the right to represent the Melb Blues Society at the International Blues Competition, Memphis 08) and Stan met in Clarksdale during the blues rinse tour of 08 where they played the Ground Zero stage together; they are now delighted to have the opportunity of working a whole show together. Jaimi is known and much loved by Melbourne audiences for his strong vocals, gorgeous, impressive guitar work and original compositions and, sadly, will be relocating to Germany soon after these gigs, so this is an opportunity to see him collaborate with an original delta bluesman.

Forget everything you’ve ever thought you knew about Celtic rock bands, because Melbourne-based outfit, Claymore, defies all expectations. This enigmatic band of multi-instrumentalists not only manages to combine traditional elements of Celtic music, but they take that passion and soul and rock it right into the 21st century. Few bands can pull off the sensitive task of re-educating the traditional realm into the modern day, but thats something of a specialty for Claymore. Not only that, but they manage to write beautiful original Celtic compositions, and even lend their style to some power rock classics, all with an Irish and Scottish twist. Since the bands inception more than two decades ago, theyve released five impressive albums, and performed internationally from gigs in New York, Scotland and New Zealand, to several headline appearances at the reputed Festival Interceltique De Lorient France. Combine this with performances at the biggest festivals on the Australian circuit such as the National Celtic Festival, Port Fairy Folk Festival, Queenscliff Music Festival, Big Blues Day Out, Perth International Arts Festival and Brunswick Music Festival to name a few, and youve got an impressive musical resume.

In addition to two Grammy nominations Kim’s songs have appeared on television in Angel, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grey’s Anatomy, and Alias to name a few. Where she truly shines though is in the recording of her own material. ‘Glimmer’, her third album was listed as one of the years 10 best in Time magazine. In 2008 she released her fifth album, ‘Chinese Boxes’, produced by Giles Martin, to high praise. Don’t miss Kim Richey in what is sure to be a memorable night at the NSC!

It’s on again! Quickly becoming something of an annual event, the Snarski brothers take to the stage at the NSC this March. Testing their musical memory banks, they will delve into the extensive catalogue of Chad’s Tree, The Jackson Code and The Blackeyed Susans. In 1983, in the outskirts of Perth, brothers Mark and Rob Snarski formed Chad’s Tree. After several alternative-chart-topping singles and albums, the Snarski brothers went their separate ways. Mark formed The Jackson Code and younger brother Rob The Blackeyed Susans along with members of The Triffids. Over the past year, Mark has managed to record his new project The Nearly Brothers with Mick Harvey producuing, Martyn Casey (The Bad Seeds), TB Allen (The Invisible Men) and Bongo Fury (The Jackson Code). Rob has been touring constantly since the release of The Blackeyed Susans 20 year retrospective Reveal Yourself 1989-2009 last year, as well as working on the follow up to his joint effort with Dan Luscombe (The Drones) . The Snarskis have also justput the finishing touches on the long awaited Chads Tree compilation Crossing Off The Miles, a 2CD retrospective which is due out in March. And so it is a small miracle that Snarski vs Snarski are able to find the time for two shows before they head to Europe to join The Triffids in their ‘A Secret in the Shape of a Song’ performances.

With a commanding live reputation, appearances at major venues and rave reviews for their work across Europe, Big Low blend ragged country, dirt-road blues and spirited electro-folk with a into a mesmerizing amalgam you’ll be hard-fixed to pin down. Using bizarre and unconventional instrumentation such as the self-built ‘banjo-bass’ (a kick drum with a tree-stump hewn neck attached to it and two wire strings), the ‘velofoon’ (a delicate sounding Arabic based string invention) and the bandoneon, these guys create a universe where there is as much room for the wide open spaces as there is for Kurt Weil or Tom Waits.

One of North America’s leading blues and folk artists, Chris Smither is renowned for his alluring baritone vocals, superb song writing and outstanding musicianship. Smither is a proud carrier of a true American tradition, regularly performing masterful arrangements of some of the classic African American blues tunes. His own songs display a wry, intellectual, deep look at it all, on the outside looking in, as one of his best songs describes. His live performance is further enhanced by the same dry, darkish sense of humour that is prevalent in so many of his songs. This is Smither’s fifth visit to Australia and he brings with him a recently released eleventh studio album, Time Stand Still.

Hailing from Houston, Texas, Jandek is the musical project of an outsider musician whose name and identity has been a mystery for over 30 years. Since 1978, Jandek has self-released over 60 albums of dissonant and often emotionally dissolute folk / blues through his label Corwood Industries. Jandek often plays a highly idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk and blues that borders on the avant-garde. Refusing to use any form of traditionalism with structure, chords and tuning, Jandek has created a stylized form of music that is entirely his own. Lyrically he mirrors the country blues and folk traditions of East Texas, but sonically, hes in a league of his own.

New Pikelet inductees Shags Chamberlain (synths), Tarquin Manek (bass, clarinet, backing vocals) and Matthew Cox (drums) bring a cosmic space-prog edge, infiltrating Evelyn’s wide-eyed style with mind-expanding results. Described as “the Australian trade name for Led Zeppelin”, Thompson and his new band get set to record a second album in the land of salsa and samba, Brazil. With a plethora of new material up his belt, Thompson reveals this will be a “much more personal album with real events and real experiences, whereas ‘Stargazer’ mostly developed from open jams and experimentation”. Whilst still maintaining his trademark blues/rock/soul sound, accompanied by flute, percussion and most recently, his Brazilian bassist who has played an integral role in the creation of this stage in his music. The new album will be one Thompson has wanted to write for many years but never had the platform to. See Jarrah Thompson and band showcase their unreleased material here in Australia before they hit up South America in July.

Based around the uplifting twin vocal attack of Hazel and Martha, it’s full of jangley guitars, distorted drums and homemade synthesisers. The single is a prime example of why this Melbourne art-pop three-piece will be shimmering out of your speakers this year, and why Otouto will be your new favourite band! Seja releases her debut solo album, ‘We Have Secrets But Nobody Cares’. Emotionally sophisticated, what reveals is the sort of mixed euphoria astronauts, or pilots, may feel when an affair begins mid-flight or whenever joy is tempered with survival doubts. If it doesnt sound like a debut, its because Seja has spent years playing synthesizers in Sekiden and Regurgitator, two of Brisbanes finest ever pop bands.

In late April, Jaimi will relocate from his hometown of Melbourne to the bursting arts hub of Berlin. Having secured a Booking Agent and European Distribution in 2009, Jaimi has been hitting the festival circuit hard, and with an ever-growing European fanbase, has decided to relocate to further capitalize on the growing success that he has paved for himself.
Harnessing her lyrical introspection, distinctive songwriting and fusing it with renowned Mercury Prize winning producer Plutonic Lab, Jess Harlen reveals her remarkable debut album ‘Neon Heartache’. The record embarks upon unchartered territory of soul music, drawing on subtle hip hop beats, reggae rhythms and moments reminiscent of Motown. Described by Rave Magazine as what real soul is meant to be from the soul, not from the formula, ‘Neon Heartache’s’ leadoff single, ‘Watch the Water’ combines the grace of acoustic melodies with dynamic rhythm while effortlessly offering up picturesque ocean imagery. Jess Harlens years touring with roots giants Blue King Brown has seasoned her gifts with an undeniable vitality. ‘Neon Heartache’ is about romantica found and lost- but a sentiment for all those around us – friends, family, and lovers. The burgeoning symbiotic producer-songwriter relationship of Plutonic Lab and Jess Harlen is paving the way for cross-genre success in Australia all while writing a chapter inits soul music legacy.

But first, the band have some great shows coming up in and around Melbourne. Crayon Fields have been invited to take part in Last Day Of Summer, a free daytime outdoor show at the National Gallery Of Victoria on February 28. They will be playing alongside Beaches, Henry Wagons and Ned Collette & Wirewalker, and the concurrent exhibition by spooky sculptor Ron Mueck. The band are also thrilled to be playing their first ever Golden Plains in early March, tickets for which have now completely sold out. And that’s not all – once they return from the US, Crayon Fields are playing a run of April shows at the special invitation of well-loved word nerds the Mountain Goats.

In time, a nucleus of musicians and friends naturally began to assemble around him, forming Rumourtism. As the band grew and solidified into a 6 piece ensemble around 2008 and having already established a modest but loyal live fan base, the beginnings of their debut album Birds Of A Feather began to take shape. The release, due in April, contains a collection of songs drawn directly from personal experience, while musically the sounds captured on record here range from the bold and hook-laden to the sweet and introspective. Their hometown album launch in Melbourne coincides with the release and servicing of the clip for ‘No Hello’ as well as the commencement of their first national tour.
